Adult Dating The concept of committed men and women looking for romantic adventures outside of their marriage dates back through the ages. Marital infidelity, which we all know means the act of having a sexual or romantic relationship with someone other than one’s husband, wife or partner 1 , has been going on for years. Historically, most of this activity has been attributed to the errant husband, but research shows married women are increasingly engaging in extramarital affairs.
And, it’s not restricted to one partner discreetly engaging in relations outside the marriage. In some circles, polyamory – or consensual, responsible non-monogamy relationships with multiple partners 2 – is regularly practiced. Romantic Affairs and Western Culture Except for the Puritans of early 16th century America, it’s only been since the 18th century and the rise of the bourgeoisie or working class up until the free love movement of the ‘s and the sexual revolution in the seventies that dating outside of marriage was frowned upon in western society.
Before then, extramarital affairs were quite common and often encouraged among the aristocratic classes. And in earlier cultures, such as the Greeks and Romans, extramarital sex was anything but taboo and thought of as erotic and normal. Foucault examines the theory of sexual repression from the late ‘s onward and how it shaped people’s views of sex in more modern times.
In their controversial best-selling book, “Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality,” authors Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha argue that until the advent of agriculture and private property ten thousand years ago, prehistoric man – and woman – were basically non-monogamous and less sexually possessive. This theory is chronicled in an online interview in Salon by Thomas Rogers and provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of sex and modern North America’s fixation on fidelity.
In response to a question about monogamous relationships, co-author Ryan states “All we’re really hoping for is to encourage more tolerance and more open discussion between men and women about sexuality and about marriage, and to come to see that marriage isn’t about sex. It’s about things that are much deeper and more lasting than sex, especially if you have children.

Alexander Raths Definition Person-centered therapy, which is also known as client-centered, non-directive, or Rogerian therapy, is an approach to counseling and psychotherapy that places much of the responsibility for the treatment process on the client, with the therapist taking a nondirective role. Purpose Two primary goals of person-centered therapy are increased self-esteem and greater openness to experience. Some of the related changes that this form of therapy seeks to foster in clients include closer agreement between the client’s idealized and actual selves; better self-understanding; lower levels of defensiveness, guilt, and insecurity; more positive and comfortable relationships with others; and an increased capacity to experience and express feelings at the moment they occur.
Description Background Developed in the s by the American psychologist Carl Rogers, client-centered therapy departed from the typically formal, detached role of the therapist emphasized in psychoanalysis and other forms of treatment. Rogers believed that therapy should take place in a supportive environment created by a close personal relationship between client and therapist.
Rogers’s introduction of the term “client” rather than “patient” expresses his rejection of the traditionally hierarchical relationship between therapist and client and his view of them as equals. In person-centered therapy, the client determines the general direction of therapy, while the therapist seeks to increase the client’s insight and self-understanding through informal clarifying questions. Beginning in the s, person-centered therapy became associated with the human potential movement.
This movement, dating back to the beginning of the s, reflected an altered perspective of human nature. Previous psychological theories viewed human beings as inherently selfish and corrupt.

In an article titled “In Defense of the Need for Honest Dialogue”, Kaufman wrote that the three of them founded NARTH because the American Psychiatric Association and similar professional organizations “had totally stifled the scientific inquiry that would be necessary to stimulate a discussion” about homosexuality. Kaufman states that NARTH was formed in response to censorship of scientific investigation of politically unpopular views.
NARTH had been an approved continuing education provider since Lehrman and Jeffrey Satinover. Controversy[ edit ] Stances on the etiology and mutability of homosexuality[ edit ] The founders held that homosexuality is a treatable mental illness and that a person’s sexual orientation can be changed through therapy. Such conversion therapy is pseudoscientific and unethical according to major medical and psychological organisations in the United States and elsewhere.

Mansell Pattison defined it as describing a person who had “experienced a basic change in sexual orientation”. Some in mixed-orientation marriages acknowledge that their sexual attractions remain primarily homosexual, but seek to make their marriages work anyway. Mental health issues are viewed as signs of a dysfunctional family; therefore, the focus of treatment is on changing the family structure rather than changing individual family members. The goal of SFT is to improve communications and interactions among family members and to highlight appropriate boundaries to create a healthier family structure. Settings for SFT include private practice, mental health clinics, substance abuse programs, child welfare agencies, and schools.
This chart helps identify the hierarchy, boundaries, and subsystems, or subrelationships, within the family unit, such as the relationship between parents or between one parent and one particular child. Using this outline, the therapist can also see where changes are needed and what type of interventions will help restructure the family.

Halloween is almost here which means Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here before you know it! But first a little refresher on the history of Halloween. It was originally meant to honor the dead and was previously known as All Hallows Eve, dating back over two thousand years ago. The most consistent origin, and probably the most well-known, refers to Halloween as a way to honor the dead.
It also signifies the end of summer, the end of the Celtic year, and the beginnings of a new one. People were very superstitious in years past and thus arose the idea that souls of the dead frolicked the streets at night. To keep the bad spirits at bay, treats were left outside to pacify the evil spirits. Think about any negative people, events recent or otherwise , or anything else that has had a negative impact on you recently.
Ideally you create something that you can give to each negative spirit, but if you have too many negative spirits to treat, then think of something you can give to all of them. Alright, now feel free to be as creative as you like. Those are just a few ideas, but whatever fancies you is what you should create. Good luck forgiving those negative spirits and Happy Halloween from Art Therapy! Halloween art by Megan Stringfellow.
